Haven't seen any of my mutuals tweet about this, but Virginia has new educational guidelines for trans kids and it's pretty fucked. I feel like the worst bit is that if a school discovers a kid is trans they have to contact their parents 🧵

I'm not trans, but I do remember in high school doing a mental health awareness screening, where you got to check for symptoms of depression and talk to a counselor for a day. And at the time I did have symptoms and I did talk to someone and it was nice

Until they told my parents everything I told them, even after I warned them not to, which made everything worse, fucked over my home life for a while, and generally made me ignore my mental health problems for years

When I was a kid, basically everyone went by a nickname. A Gregory would go by Greg. Or a Xiang Zhou would go by Rebecca Zhou. I feel like it'd be insane to have teachers refuse to call Timothy their preferred name, Timmy, by claiming their "religion" says not to
-
But when "Samuel" wants to go by Sammy because she's come out as trans, suddenly a teacher has a God-given right to not respect that? Even if this 16 year old girl is sitting in class bawling her eyes out? She has to do government paperwork for a *nickname*? Bull fuckin shit

The oppression of trans children I think reveals the more general oppression of children at large, where they are treated as property until they turn 18. People have no empathy for kids, just the parents that hate them
